University of Warmia and Mazury

UWM was founded on 1 September 1999. This University is a result of the merger of three higher education institutions in Olsztyn, namely the Academy of Agriculture and Technology, the Graduate School of Education and the Theological Institute of Warmian.
At first, in 1999, there were 12 faculties, 32 courses of study and 24,500 students at the UWM. The University also had the right to award doctorates in 13 scientific disciplines and postdoctoral degrees in 6 branches. Under the act of establishing the University, Professor Ryszard Górecki, PhD, served as the first rector of the UWM. The university was established in Kortowo – a university campus that belonged to the Academy of Arts and Technology.
Over the years, the UWM offering has expanded to new branches of study and, as a result, new faculties have been created. There are currently 17 faculties at the UWM, of which 11 have all academic rights, namely the right to award postdoctoral degrees (in 13 disciplines). In addition, the doctorate can be awarded to 16 faculties in 24 disciplines.
